Beautiful Gold Creek Village |
One of the special things about Canberra is
the fact that it's a planned city. Some see this as a real
positive, and are fascinated by the fact that Canberra grew from
little more than a drawing on a piece of paper into the proud,
cosmopolitan capital we see today. Others see this as a
negative, believing Canberra has no real history and therefore
no soul! They feel the city is too modern and too planned.
These people obviously haven't visited Gold Creek Village!
A visit to Gold Creek Village is like a
step back in time. The Village is located in the Gungahlin
Region, on the site of the historic Ginninderra Village, which
dates back to 1883 - long before Canberra was a twinkle in
Walter Burley Griffins eye. |
The historic Ginninderra School House and
Masters Residence (located in the Village) was constructed in
1883 and operated as the public school from 1884 to 1910.
The building was used for the next 60 years as a residence for
the school masters from Hall and as a post office. The
Ginninderra Village and school house was privately purchased in
December 1982 and a program of restoration and re-developments
of the grounds and public buildings undertaken.
Several colonial buildings are scattered
throughout Gold Creek Village, and as you wonder through the
streets it's easy to imagine you are in a small country town,
rather than just 15 minutes from the Canberra CBD.
Gold Creek Village also houses one of the
oldest buildings in Canberra but, interestingly, it has only
been in the Village for the past 35 years! How come?
The building (a slab hut) was built in 1860 in the NSW town of
Bookham (approx 130km from Canberra). It was later
transported to its current location in the Village back in 1970.
The old hut oozes rustic charm and now houses a famous local
landmark restaurant.
