Census Counts
Applicable to all persons (including overseas visitors)

On Census Night, 7 August 2001, there were 8449
people (4021 males and 4428 females) counted in Ngunnawal(1). This represents an increase of 4040 people (91.6%) since the 1996 Census, and an increase of 8449 people since the 1991 Census (see
Table 2). Of those people counted on Census Night, 8176 (96.8%) were counted at home.

People of Indigenous Origin(2)
Applicable to all persons (excluding overseas visitors)

There were 87 people
(1.0%) (35 males and 52 females) who identified as being of Indigenous origin in the 2001 Census. This represents an increase of 61 people (234.6%) (23 males and 38 females) since the 1996 Census, and an increase of 87 people (35 males and 52 females) since the 1991 Census.

In the 1996 Census there were 26 people
(0.6%) (12 males and 14 females) who identified as being of Indigenous origin, and 0 people (0.0%)
(0 males and 0 females) who identified as being of indigenous origin in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, 6277 people
(74.6%) stated that they were Australian-born. This compares with 3353 people (76.2%) in the 1996 Census and 0 people (0.0%) in the 1991 Census.

The number of people born overseas in the 2001 Census was 1803
(21.4%) compared with 929 (21.1%) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) in the 1991 Census.

Of those born overseas, the three main countries of birth in the
2001 Census were:

Croatia: 115
(1.4%) and;
Viet Nam: 113
(1.3%).

Of those born overseas in the 1996 Census, the three main countries of birth were United Kingdom: 209

In the 2001 Census, the three most common ancestries identified with were:

Australian: 3228 people
(38.4%)
English: 2681 people
(31.9%) and;
Irish: 979 people
(11.6%).

Language Spoken at Home(5)
Applicable to all persons (excluding overseas visitors)

English was stated as the only language spoken at home by 6495 people
(77.2%) in the 2001 Census. This compares with 3571 people (81.2%) in the 1996 Census and 0 people (0.0%) in the 1991 Census.

The three most common languages spoken at home other than English in the 2001 Census were:

Croatian: 246
(2.9%)
Chinese languages: 215
(2.6%) and;
Vietnamese: 135
(1.6%).

The three most common languages spoken at home other than English in the 1996 Census were Croatian: 146
(3.3%), Chinese languages: 91 (2.1%) and Spanish: 67 (1.5%). The three most common languages spoken at home other than English in the 1991 Census were : there were no language responses.

Computers and the Internet(6)
Applicable to all persons (excluding overseas visitors)

In the week preceding the 2001 Census, 4575 people
(54.4%) had used a personal computer at home. Of these, usage of a personal computer at home by specific age groups reflected 1233 people aged 0-19 years (14.7%), 2743 people aged 20-44 years (32.6%), 553 people aged 45-64 years (6.6%) and 46 people aged 65 years and over (0.5%).

The total number of persons who had used the Internet in the week preceding the 2001 Census was 4420. There were 975 people
(11.6%) who had used the Internet at work only, 1692 people (20.1%) who had used the internet at home only and 316 people (3.8%) who had used the internet elsewhere only.

There were 1437 people
(17.1%) who provided a multiple response to the question of Internet use. There were 1154 people (13.7%) who had used the Internet at home and at work, 147 people (1.7%) who had used the Internet at home and elsewhere, 34 people (0.4%) who had used the Internet at work and elsewhere, and 102 people (1.2%) who had used the Internet at home, work and elsewhere.

Registered Marital Status
Applicable to persons aged 15 years and over (excluding overseas visitors)

In the 2001 Census, there were 3145 married people
(49.8%) (1559 males and 1586 females), 271 separated people (4.3%) (118 males and 153 females), 562 divorced people (8.9%) (209 males and 353 females), 125 widowed people (2.0%) (17 males and 108 females) and 2216 people who had never been married (35.1%) (1056 males and 1160 females).

In the 1996 Census, there were 1634 married people
(47.4%) (808 males and 826 females), 157 separated people (4.6%) (68 males and 89 females), 225 divorced people (6.5%) (85 males and 140 females), 61 widowed people (1.8%) (16 males and 45 females) and 1372 people who had never been married (39.8%) (676 males and 696 females).

In the 1991 Census, there were 0 married people
(0.0%) (0 males and 0 females), 0 separated people (0.0%) (0 males and 0 females), 0 divorced people (0.0%) (0 males and 0 females), 0 widowed people (0.0%) (0 males and 0 females) and 0 people who had never been married (0.0%)

Non-School Qualification: Level of Education(7)

In the 2001 Census, 346
(5.5%) people (197 males and 149 females) held a postgraduate degree, graduate diploma or graduate certificate. This compares with 125 (3.6%) people (63 males and 62 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, 984
(15.6%) people (439 males and 545 females) held a bachelor degree, compared with 498 (14.4%) people (244 males and 254 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

There were 1577
(25.0%) people (858 males and 719 females) with an advanced diploma, diploma or certificate in the 2001 Census, compared with 760 (22.0%) people (412 males and 348 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, 3407
(54.0%) people (1462 males and 1945 females) did not have a qualification, did not state a qualification or stated a qualification outside of the scope of the standard classification. This compares with 2065 (59.9%) people (934 males and 1131 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

Labour Force Status(8)
Applicable to persons aged 15 years and over (excluding overseas visitors)


During the week prior to Census Night 2001, 4756 people in Ngunnawal (2405 males and 2351 females) were employed, representing
95.8% of the labour force. Of these, 3411 (71.7%) people (1960 males and 1451 females) were working full-time and 1229 (25.8%) people (386 males and 843 females) were working part-time. This compares with 2683 (94.6%) people (1372 males and 1311 females) who were employed in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) who were employed in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, 210 people (105 males and 105 females) were unemployed, representing
4.2% of the labour force. Of these, 140 (66.7%) people (82 males and 58 females) were looking for full-time work and 70 (33.3%) people (23 males and 47 females) were looking for part-time work. In the 1996 Census, there were 152 (5.4%) unemployed people (85 males and 67 females) and 0 (0.0%) unemployed people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, 413
(8.7%) people (259 males and 154 females) were employed as Managers and Administrators, which compares with 191 (7.1%) people (114 males and 77 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census. There were 1037 (21.8%) people (527 males and 510 females) employed as Professionals in the 2001 Census, which compares with 553 (20.6%) people (291 males and 262 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

There were 790
(16.6%) people (406 males and 384 females) employed as Associate Professionals in the 2001 Census, which compares with 425 (15.8%) people (225 males and 200 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census. 442 (9.3%) people (381 males and 61 females) were employed as Tradespersons and Related Workers in the 2001 Census, which compares with 310 (11.6%) people (266 males and 44 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, there were 989
(20.8%) people (302 males and 687 females) employed as Intermediate Clerical, Sales and Service Workers, which compares with 620 (23.1%) people (169 males and 451 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census. There were 214 (4.5%) people (136 males and 78 females) employed as Labourers and Related Workers in the 2001 Census, which compares with 105 (3.9%) people (58 males and 47 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%)
people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, 166
(3.5%) people (125 males and 41 females) were employed in the Manufacturing industry, which compares with 95 (3.5%) people (70 males and 25 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census. There were 273 (5.8%) people (240 males and 33 females) employed in the Construction industry in the 2001 Census, compared with 151 (5.6%) people (133 males and 18 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

There were 563
(11.9%) people (289 males and 274 females) employed in the Retail Trade industry in the 2001 Census, compared with 325 (12.1%) people (177 males and 148 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census. 731 (15.4%) people (412 males and 319 females) were employed in the Property and Business Services industry in the 2001 Census, compared with 300 (11.2%) people (159 males and 141 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, there were 304
(6.4%) people (112 males and 192 females) employed in the Education industry, compared with 185 (6.9%) people (74 males and 111 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census. There were 321 (6.8%) people (56 males and 265 females) employed in the Health and Community Services industry in the 2001 Census, compared with 160 (6.0%) people (26 males and 134 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

The median weekly individual income for people aged 15 years and over in the 2001 Census was $600-$699. While not directly comparable, the median income recorded in the 1996 Census was $500-$599 and 0 in the 1991 Census.

Applicable to employed persons aged 15 years and over (excluding overseas visitors)


On Census day, 7 August 2001, 3
(0.1%) people travelled to work by train only, 161 (3.4%) people took the bus only and 0 (0.0%) people took both the train and bus. There were 3678 (77.3%) people who travelled to work by car, either as the driver or as a passenger and 70 (1.5%) people either rode a bike or walked to work.
 

 

Families and Households
Applicable to families and persons in occupied private dwellings

In the 2001 Census, there were 1117 couple families with children (which comprised
47.4% of all families in occupied private dwellings), 807 couple families without children (34.2%), 394 one parent families (16.7%) and 41 other families (1.7%).

In the 2001 Census, there were 2230 separate houses
