Census Counts
Applicable to all persons (including overseas visitors)

On Census Night, 7 August 2001, there were 5864
people (2816 males and 3048 females) counted in Nicholls(1). This represents an increase of 4076 people (228.0%) since the 1996 Census, and an increase of 5864 people since the 1991 Census (see
Table 2). Of those people counted on Census Night, 5576 (95.1%) were counted at home.

People of Indigenous Origin(2)
Applicable to all persons (excluding overseas visitors)

There were 42 people
(0.7%) (26 males and 16 females) who identified as being of Indigenous origin in the 2001 Census. This represents an increase of 29 people (223.1%) (19 males and 10 females) since the 1996 Census, and an increase of 42 people (26 males and 16 females) since the 1991 Census.

In the 1996 Census there were 13 people
(0.7%) (7 males and 6 females) who identified as being of Indigenous origin, and 0 people (0.0%)
(0 males and 0 females) who identified as being of indigenous origin in the 1991 Census.

The median age of people in the 2001 Census was 30 years. In the 1996 Census the median age of people was 27 years, while in the 1991 Census the median age of people was 0 years. See

Birthplace
Applicable to all persons (excluding overseas visitors)

In the 2001 Census, 4286 people
(73.4%) stated that they were Australian-born. This compares with 1348 people (76.0%) in the 1996 Census and 0 people (0.0%) in the 1991 Census.

The number of people born overseas in the 2001 Census was 1353
(23.2%) compared with 381 (21.5%) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) in the 1991 Census.

Of those born overseas, the three main countries of birth in the
2001 Census were:

United Kingdom: 289
(4.9%)
Croatia: 93
(1.6%) and;
Viet Nam: 83
(1.4%).

Of those born overseas in the 1996 Census, the three main countries of birth were United Kingdom: 84
(4.8%), Croatia: 56 (3.2%) and Italy: 20 (1.1%)
. Of those born overseas in the 1991 Census, the three main countries of birth were : there were no birthplace responses.
 

 

Ancestry(4)
Applicable to all persons (excluding overseas visitors)

In the 2001 Census, the three most common ancestries identified with were:

Australian: 2161 people
(37.0%)
English: 1804 people
(30.9%) and;
Irish: 625 people
(10.7%).

Language Spoken at Home(5)
Applicable to all persons (excluding overseas visitors)

English was stated as the only language spoken at home by 4485 people
(76.9%) in the 2001 Census. This compares with 1346 people (75.9%) in the 1996 Census and 0 people (0.0%) in the 1991 Census.

The three most common languages spoken at home other than English in the 2001 Census were:

Croatian: 188
(3.2%)
Chinese languages: 180
(3.1%) and;
Italian: 120
(2.1%).

The three most common languages spoken at home other than English in the 1996 Census were Croatian: 106
(6.0%), Chinese languages: 49 (2.8%) and Italian: 36 (2.0%). The three most common languages spoken at home other than English in the 1991 Census were : there were no language responses.

Computers and the Internet(6)
Applicable to all persons (excluding overseas visitors)

In the week preceding the 2001 Census, 3742 people
(64.1%) had used a personal computer at home. Of these, usage of a personal computer at home by specific age groups reflected 1331 people aged 0-19 years (22.8%), 1678 people aged 20-44 years (28.8%), 675 people aged 45-64 years (11.6%) and 58 people aged 65 years and over (1.0%).

The total number of persons who had used the Internet in the week preceding the 2001 Census was 3340. There were 570 people
(9.8%) who had used the Internet at work only, 1494 people (25.6%) who had used the internet at home only and 142 people (2.4%) who had used the internet elsewhere only.

There were 1134 people
(19.4%) who provided a multiple response to the question of Internet use. There were 927 people (15.9%) who had used the Internet at home and at work, 143 people (2.5%) who had used the Internet at home and elsewhere, 6 people (0.1%) who had used the Internet at work and elsewhere, and 58 people (1.0%) who had used the Internet at home, work and elsewhere.

People were asked to indicate whether, in the week preceding the Census, they had used a personal computer at home and whether they had used the Internet at home, at work or elsewhere. Registered Marital Status
Applicable to persons aged 15 years and over (excluding overseas visitors)

In the 2001 Census, there were 2698 married people
(65.8%) (1327 males and 1371 females), 94 separated people (2.3%) (36 males and 58 females), 186 divorced people (4.5%) (66 males and 120 females), 93 widowed people (2.3%) (14 males and 79 females) and 1027 people who had never been married (25.1%) (513 males and 514 females).

In the 1996 Census, there were 821 married people
(65.5%) (404 males and 417 females), 23 separated people (1.8%) (10 males and 13 females), 41 divorced people (3.3%) (20 males and 21 females), 21 widowed people (1.7%) (0 males and 21 females) and 348 people who had never been married (27.8%) (174 males and 174 females).

In the 1991 Census, there were 0 married people
(0.0%) (0 males and 0 females), 0 separated people (0.0%) (0 males and 0 females), 0 divorced people (0.0%) (0 males and 0 females), 0 widowed people (0.0%) (0 males and 0 females) and 0 people who had never been married (0.0%)
(0 males and 0 females).
 

 

Non-School Qualification: Level of Education(7)

In the 2001 Census, 334
(8.1%) people (195 males and 139 females) held a postgraduate degree, graduate diploma or graduate certificate. This compares with 71 (5.6%) people (44 males and 27 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, 743
(18.1%) people (369 males and 374 females) held a bachelor degree, compared with 189 (15.0%) people (104 males and 85 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

There were 927
(22.6%) people (510 males and 417 females) with an advanced diploma, diploma or certificate in the 2001 Census, compared with 240 (19.0%) people (137 males and 103 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, 2106
(51.2%) people (890 males and 1216 females) did not have a qualification, did not state a qualification or stated a qualification outside of the scope of the standard classification. This compares with 762 (60.4%) people (327 males and 435 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

Labour Force Status(8)
Applicable to persons aged 15 years and over (excluding overseas visitors)


During the week prior to Census Night 2001, 3061 people in Nicholls (1581 males and 1480 females) were employed, representing
96.7% of the labour force. Of these, 2115 (69.1%) people (1313 males and 802 females) were working full-time and 878 (28.7%) people (236 males and 642 females) were working part-time. This compares with 952 (94.3%) people (480 males and 472 females) who were employed in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) who were employed in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, 104 people (47 males and 57 females) were unemployed, representing
3.3% of the labour force. Of these, 56 (53.8%) people (37 males and 19 females) were looking for full-time work and 48 (46.2%) people (10 males and 38 females) were looking for part-time work. In the 1996 Census, there were 58 (5.7%) unemployed people (35 males and 23 females) and 0 (0.0%) unemployed people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, 433
(14.1%) people (316 males and 117 females) were employed as Managers and Administrators, which compares with 122 (12.8%) people (90 males and 32 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census. There were 783 (25.6%) people (415 males and 368 females) employed as Professionals in the 2001 Census, which compares with 232 (24.3%) people (113 males and 119 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

There were 465
(15.2%) people (255 males and 210 females) employed as Associate Professionals in the 2001 Census, which compares with 119 (12.5%) people (68 males and 51 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census. 231 (7.5%) people (202 males and 29 females) were employed as Tradespersons and Related Workers in the 2001 Census, which compares with 84 (8.8%) people (79 males and 5 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, there were 530
(17.3%) people (151 males and 379 females) employed as Intermediate Clerical, Sales and Service Workers, which compares with 190 (19.9%) people (47 males and 143 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census. There were 97 (3.2%) people (58 males and 39 females) employed as Labourers and Related Workers in the 2001 Census, which compares with 40 (4.2%) people (26 males and 14 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%)
people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

Industry of Employment(10)
Applicable to employed persons aged 15 years and over (excluding overseas visitors)


In the 2001 Census, 95
(3.1%) people (64 males and 31 females) were employed in the Manufacturing industry, which compares with 27 (2.8%) people (15 males and 12 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census. There were 189 (6.2%) people (156 males and 33 females) employed in the Construction industry in the 2001 Census, compared with 63 (6.6%) people (49 males and 14 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

There were 359
(11.8%) people (162 males and 197 females) employed in the Retail Trade industry in the 2001 Census, compared with 118 (12.4%) people (55 males and 63 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census. 519 (17.0%) people (301 males and 218 females) were employed in the Property and Business Services industry in the 2001 Census, compared with 120 (12.6%) people (56 males and 64 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, there were 217
(7.1%) people (69 males and 148 females) employed in the Education industry, compared with 88 (9.3%) people (32 males and 56 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census. There were 177 (5.8%) people (33 males and 144 females) employed in the Health and Community Services industry in the 2001 Census, compared with 45 (4.7%) people (3 males and 42 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

Individual Income(11)

The median weekly individual income for people aged 15 years and over in the 2001 Census was $600-$699. While not directly comparable, the median income recorded in the 1996 Census was $500-$599 and 0 in the 1991 Census.

Method of Travel to Work
Applicable to employed persons aged 15 years and over (excluding overseas visitors)


On Census day, 7 August 2001, 0
(0.0%) people travelled to work by train only, 80 (2.6%) people took the bus only and 0 (0.0%) people took both the train and bus. There were 2382 (77.8%) people who travelled to work by car, either as the driver or as a passenger and 42 (1.4%) people either rode a bike or walked to work.
 

 

Families and Households
Applicable to families and persons in occupied private dwellings

In the 2001 Census, there were 1018 couple families with children (which comprised
63.5% of all families in occupied private dwellings), 461 couple families without children (28.7%), 111 one parent families (6.9%) and 14 other families (0.9%).

There were 91 people
(1.6%) in group households and 162 people (2.9%)
in lone person households in the 2001 Census.
 

 

Dwellings(12)
Applicable to occupied private dwellings

In the 2001 Census, there were 1444 separate houses
(79.6%), 366 semi detached, row or terrace houses and townhouses (20.2%), 0 flats, units or apartments (0.0%) and 5 other dwellings (0.3%).

In the 1996 Census, there were 452 separate houses
(79.7%), 106 semi detached, row or terrace houses and townhouses (18.7%), 3 flats, units or apartments (0.5%) and 3 other dwellings (0.5%).

In the 1991 Census, there were 0 separate houses

Of all occupied private dwellings in the 2001 Census, 1432 were either fully owned or being purchased, which represents
(78.6%) of all occupied private dwellings, while 319 (17.5%) were being rented. This compares with 426 (75.4%) either fully owned or being purchased and 116 (20.5%) being rented in the 1996 Census, and 0 (0.0%) either fully owned or being purchased and 0 (0.0%)
being rented in the 1991 Census.
