Census Counts

On Census Night, 7 August 2001, there were 5610
people (2780 males and 2830 females) counted in Palmerston(1). This represents an increase of 453 people (8.8%) since the 1996 Census, and an increase of 5534 people (7281.6%) since the 1991 Census (
see Table 2). Of those people counted on Census Night, 5476 (97.6%) were counted at home.

People of Indigenous Origin

There were 53 people (0.9%) (27 males and 26 females) who identified as being of Indigenous origin in the 2001 Census. This represents an increase of 35 people (194.4%) (16 males and 19 females) since the 1996 Census, and an increase of 53 people (27 males and 26 females) since the 1991 Census.

In the 1996 Census there were 18 people (0.4%) (11 males and 7 females) who identified as being of Indigenous origin, and 0 people (0.0%) (0 males and 0 females) who identified as being of indigenous origin in the 1991 Census.

Age

The median age of people in the 2001 Census was 29 years. In the 1996 Census the median age of people was 27 years, while in the 1991 Census the median age of people was 27 years. See

Birthplace

Applicable to all persons (excluding overseas visitors)

In the 2001 Census, 3813 people (68.3%) stated that they were Australian-born. This compares with 3677 people (71.7%) in the 1996 Census and 65 people (85.5%) in the 1991 Census.

The number of people born overseas in the 2001 Census was 1507 (27.0%) compared with 1360 (26.5%) in the 1996 Census and 9 (11.8%) in the 1991 Census.

Of those born overseas, the three main countries of birth in the 2001 Census were:

United Kingdom: 198 (3.5%)
Viet Nam: 170 (3.0%) and;
China (excludes SAR's and Taiwan Province): 112 (2.0%).

Of those born overseas in the 1996 Census, the three main countries of birth were United Kingdom: 196 (3.8%), Viet Nam: 129 (2.5%) and Croatia: 88 (1.7%). Of those born overseas in the 1991 Census, the three main countries of birth were Germany: 3 (4.2%), United Kingdom: 3 (4.2%) and No third highest count available.
 

 


Ancestry

In the 2001 Census, the three most common ancestries identified with were:

Australian: 1906 people (34.1%)
English: 1599 people (28.6%) and;
Irish: 577 people (10.3%).

Language Spoken at Home

English was stated as the only language spoken at home by 3919 people (70.2%) in the 2001 Census. This compares with 3755 people (73.2%) in the 1996 Census and 68 people (89.5%) in the 1991 Census.

The three most common languages spoken at home other than English in the 2001 Census were:

Chinese languages: 257 (4.6%)
Vietnamese: 217 (3.9%) and;
Croatian: 138 (2.5%).

The three most common languages spoken at home other than English in the 1996 Census were Chinese languages: 193 (3.8%), Croatian: 193 (3.8%) and Vietnamese: 150 (2.9%). The three most common languages spoken at home other than English in the 1991 Census were : there were no language responses.

Computers and the Internet

In the week preceding the 2001 Census, 3247 people (58.1%) had used a personal computer at home. Of these, usage of a personal computer at home by specific age groups reflected 1049 people aged 0-19 years (18.8%), 1638 people aged 20-44 years (29.3%), 528 people aged 45-64 years (9.5%) and 32 people aged 65 years and over (0.6%).

The total number of persons who had used the Internet in the week preceding the 2001 Census was 3102. There were 611 people (10.9%) who had used the Internet at work only, 1258 people (22.5%) who had used the internet at home only and 228 people (4.1%) who had used the internet elsewhere only.

There were 1005 people (18.0%) who provided a multiple response to the question of Internet use. There were 794 people (14.2%) who had used the Internet at home and at work, 129 people (2.3%) who had used the Internet at home and elsewhere, 14 people (0.3%) who had used the Internet at work and elsewhere, and 68 people (1.2%) who had used the Internet at home, work and elsewhere.

Registered Marital Status

Applicable to persons aged 15 years and over (excluding overseas visitors)

In the 2001 Census, there were 2230 married people (52.6%) (1112 males and 1118 females), 115 separated people (2.7%) (49 males and 66 females), 271 divorced people (6.4%) (101 males and 170 females), 99 widowed people (2.3%) (17 males and 82 females) and 1521 people who had never been married (35.9%) (780 males and 741 females).

In the 1996 Census, there were 2125 married people (55.3%) (1058 males and 1067 females), 131 separated people (3.4%) (50 males and 81 females), 201 divorced people (5.2%) (85 males and 116 females), 71 widowed people (1.8%) (12 males and 59 females) and 1318 people who had never been married (34.3%) (651 males and 667 females).

In the 1991 Census, there were 33 married people (46.5%) (16 males and 17 females), 3 separated people (4.2%) (0 males and 3 females), 3 divorced people (4.2%) (0 males and 3 females), 3 widowed people (4.2%) (0 males and 3 females) and 29 people who had never been married (40.8%) (13 males and 16 females).
 

 


Non-School Qualification: Level of Education

In the 2001 Census, 335 (7.9%) people (199 males and 136 females) held a postgraduate degree, graduate diploma or graduate certificate. This compares with 223 (5.8%) people (125 males and 98 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, 697 (16.5%) people (326 males and 371 females) held a bachelor degree, compared with 555 (14.4%) people (273 males and 282 females) in the 1996 Census and 9 (13.8%) people (3 males and 6 females) in the 1991 Census.

There were 924 (21.8%) people (523 males and 401 females) with an advanced diploma, diploma or certificate in the 2001 Census, compared with 828 (21.6%) people (477 males and 351 females) in the 1996 Census and 13 (20.0%) people (7 males and 6 females) in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, 2273 (53.7%) people (1011 males and 1262 females) did not have a qualification, did not state a qualification or stated a qualification outside of the scope of the standard classification. This compares with 2235 (58.2%) people (976 males and 1259 females) in the 1996 Census and 43 (66.2%) people (19 males and 24 females) in the 1991 Census.

Labour Force Status

During the week prior to Census Night 2001, 3106 people in Palmerston (1638 males and 1468 females) were employed, representing 96.1% of the labour force. Of these, 2149 (69.2%) people (1282 males and 867 females) were working full-time and 876 (28.2%) people (309 males and 567 females) were working part-time. This compares with 2900 (94.5%) people (1513 males and 1387 females) who were employed in the 1996 Census and 48 (100.0%) people (24 males and 24 females) who were employed in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, 125 people (63 males and 62 females) were unemployed, representing 3.9% of the labour force. Of these, 82 (65.6%) people (54 males and 28 females) were looking for full-time work and 43 (34.4%) people (9 males and 34 females) were looking for part-time work. In the 1996 Census, there were 169 (5.5%) unemployed people (87 males and 82 females) and 0 (0.0%) unemployed people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

Occupation

In the 2001 Census, 286 (9.2%) people (193 males and 93 females) were employed as Managers and Administrators, which compares with 230 (7.9%) people (144 males and 86 females) in the 1996 Census and 10 (22.7%) people (5 males and 5 females) in the 1991 Census. There were 735 (23.7%) people (414 males and 321 females) employed as Professionals in the 2001 Census, which compares with 661 (22.8%) people (361 males and 300 females) in the 1996 Census and 9 (20.5%) people (3 males and 6 females) in the 1991 Census.

There were 467 (15.0%) people (250 males and 217 females) employed as Associate Professionals in the 2001 Census, which compares with 374 (12.9%) people (220 males and 154 females) in the 1996 Census and 9 (20.5%) people (4 males and 5 females) in the 1991 Census. 284 (9.1%) people (245 males and 39 females) were employed as Tradespersons and Related Workers in the 2001 Census, which compares with 319 (11.0%) people (272 males and 47 females) in the 1996 Census and 7 (15.9%) people (7 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, there were 623 (20.1%) people (202 males and 421 females) employed as Intermediate Clerical, Sales and Service Workers, which compares with 574 (19.8%) people (175 males and 399 females) in the 1996 Census and 3 (6.8%) people (0 males and 3 females) in the 1991 Census. There were 135 (4.3%) people (77 males and 58 females) employed as Labourers and Related Workers in the 2001 Census, which compares with 149 (5.1%) people (85 males and 64 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

Industry of Employment

In the 2001 Census, 108 (3.5%) people (77 males and 31 females) were employed in the Manufacturing industry, which compares with 104 (3.6%) people (68 males and 36 females) in the 1996 Census and 0 (0.0%) people (0 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census. There were 193 (6.2%) people (164 males and 29 females) employed in the Construction industry in the 2001 Census, compared with 202 (7.0%) people (176 males and 26 females) in the 1996 Census and 3 (5.7%) people (3 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census.

There were 364 (11.7%) people (189 males and 175 females) employed in the Retail Trade industry in the 2001 Census, compared with 298 (10.3%) people (153 males and 145 females) in the 1996 Census and 3 (5.7%) people (3 males and 0 females) in the 1991 Census. 473 (15.2%) people (264 males and 209 females) were employed in the Property and Business Services industry in the 2001 Census, compared with 347 (12.0%) people (180 males and 167 females) in the 1996 Census and 6 (11.3%) people (3 males and 3 females) in the 1991 Census.

In the 2001 Census, there were 214 (6.9%) people (75 males and 139 females) employed in the Education industry, compared with 172 (5.9%) people (57 males and 115 females) in the 1996 Census and 3 (5.7%) people (0 males and 3 females) in the 1991 Census. There were 211 (6.8%) people (34 males and 177 females) employed in the Health and Community Services industry in the 2001 Census, compared with 178 (6.1%) people (36 males and 142 females) in the 1996 Census and 6 (11.3%) people (3 males and 3 females) in the 1991 Census.

Individual Income

The median weekly individual income for people aged 15 years and over in the 2001 Census was $500-$599. While not directly comparable, the median income recorded in the 1996 Census was $400-$499 and $400-$499 in the 1991 Census.

Method of Travel to Work

Applicable to employed persons aged 15 years and over (excluding overseas visitors)


On Census day, 7 August 2001, 3 (0.1%) people travelled to work by train only, 145 (4.7%) people took the bus only and 3 (0.1%) people took both the train and bus. There were 2364 (76.0%) people who travelled to work by car, either as the driver or as a passenger and 48 (1.5%) people either rode a bike or walked to work.
 

 


Families and Households

Applicable to families and persons in occupied private dwellings

In the 2001 Census, there were 831 couple families with children (which comprised 55.4% of all families in occupied private dwellings), 447 couple families without children (29.8%), 192 one parent families (12.8%) and 29 other families (1.9%).

There were 233 people (4.3%) in group households and 368 people (6.8%) in lone person households in the 2001 Census.
 

 


Dwellings

Applicable to occupied private dwellings

In the 2001 Census, there were 1404 separate houses (69.3%), 576 semi detached, row or terrace houses and townhouses (28.4%), 41 flats, units or apartments (2.0%) and 0 other dwellings (0.0%).

In the 1996 Census, there were 1223 separate houses (67.2%), 586 semi detached, row or terrace houses and townhouses (32.2%), 6 flats, units or apartments (0.3%) and 0 other dwellings (0.0%).

In the 1991 Census, there were 26 separate houses (81.3%), 0 semi detached, row or terrace houses and townhouses (0.0%), 3 flats, units or apartments (9.4%) and 3 other dwellings (9.4%).

Of all occupied private dwellings in the 2001 Census, 1291 were either fully owned or being purchased, which represents (63.8%) of all occupied private dwellings, while 644 (31.8%) were being rented. This compares with 1106 (60.8%) either fully owned or being purchased and 664 (36.5%) being rented in the 1996 Census, and 3 (10.0%) either fully owned or being purchased and 24 (80.0%) being rented in the 1991 Census.
