'About Us'
Locals helping locals
Hello!, and thanks for visiting
the Gungahlin Region On-line!. I'm Darren
Giles, and I have called Gungahlin 'home' since 1996.
|
Gungahlin - our
home, our community |
|
I have a real affinity with the
area and love the way it has constantly developed and grown in the
12 years I have lived here. I vividly remember moving into
my first home in Ngunnawal - a modest 10 square home with four
walls, a roof and little else! I had no neighbours to annoy,
no landscaping and every time the wind blew I spent the next week
trying to get the dust out of the curtains and carpets. I
also remember when the only club in the area was
a couple of demountable buildings that
housed a few poker machines and served beer directly from a keg!
oh, and they sold bread and milk from a caravan
beside the road. How things change!
Today of course, Gungahlin is home to
over 32,000 people and we seem to have a new business of service
open up each day.

Why develop
Gungahlin On-line? |
|
One of the things that often
frustrated me about living in this area was a lack of local
information - I wanted to find things to do with the kids but,
getting any information on this in the early days, was difficult to
say the least. I was also sick of trying to get a tradesman
or service to come out here from the other side of town - it would
be so much easier to get a local in, but how do you find them?
By 2004 it became obvious - "if the
mountain wasn't going to come to Mohamed - I would have to go to
the mountain"! Enter the Gungahlin Region On-line! web site. Through the Gungahlin Region On-line! web site
I am trying to promote the local region by offering valuable
community based information and services. In essence, I am
attempting to become the central reference point for all information
on the Gungahlin Region.
|
A business
Directory? - Good idea but... |
|
I thought about simply providing an
on-line business & trade directory but this wouldn't help anyone
know what was actually happening in the region. To be really
useful, the web site needed to include news, sport, weather, and a
range of community information. A true 'one stop' shop for all
information in the region.

Our commitment to
Gungahlin |
|
I have lived in Gungahlin for a
decade now. my three children were all born here, and they
attended local Gungahlin schools. To show I am committed to
this venture, I registered a business name (DB Internet services)
in March 2005, to operate the Gungahlin Region On-line! web site.
DB Internet Services is a small, family run
business located in Gungahlin, ACT. DB Internet Services offer a range of
Internet advertising packages and web page design for both small
business and individual clients.
Thanks again for visiting our web
site. If there is anything you would like to see included
on the site please let us know. After all, the web site is
for everyone living in this fantastic region. Send us an
email.

PS: In 1997, I opened my own
local weather centre - partly because of my frustration of the
local media who failed to report any weather conditions from
Gungahlin. I was able to combine my love of the weather,
with my growing passion for the Internet, to produce the local
Gungahlin Weather Centre.
